Why Santa Doesn’t Visit Our House
I absolutely love this time of year with the Christmas tree, stocking on the fireplace, lights lining the house, and all the winter scents. But there is one item you won’t find at my house this time of year.
Yes, that is right; I tell my kids the truth about Santa Claus. I know that may be shocking to many of you, and before you call me a Scrooge, keep reading to find my reasons.
1. Children are unable to distinguish between truth and fiction at a young age. If I tell them that Santa is real, and I tell them other truths that I expect them to believe, how can they possibly distinguish between truth and lie? I want my children to believe me when I tell them what is best for them. This leads to my second point.
2. I don’t tell my children that Santa is real because I don’t lie to them. When I first became a mom, I made a promise to myself, and my son, that I would never lie to him. Yes, that means that some topics can be a bit tricky to discuss, but I would rather that he (and each of my children) get the truth on those topics than believe myths, or exaggerations from peers, media, or other sources.
3. I only teach my children values which we hold to be true, like believing in God. For my family, Christmas is about the birth of Christ, not a jolly old man in red suit that breaks into your house to eat cookies. The magic of Christmas is not lost on this point, but in actuality, is made that much clearer.
Of course, this has caused a bit of stir with my son and his peers. Last year, he told the doctor that Santa doesn’t exist when she asked what he had asked Santa for. That wouldn’t have been awkward, except the waiting room was full with other children. Oops! He was only 5 at the time. This year he is more in tune with keeping this truth under wraps. The challenging question this year from my son is why other parents tell their children something that isn’t true. For that, I tell him in all honesty, that I just don’t know.
What do you think? Do you tell your children that Santa exists? Why or why not?
