Top Four Ways Moms are Like Champion Athletes
By Laura Sussely-Pope, Pregnancy.org
With the Olympics in full swing, it’s hard not to be impressed with the athletes we see. Their determination, discipline, focus and sacrifice. That sounds a lot like moms to me!
- Determination: Have you ever seen moms go through numerous proverbial hoops to get their child into the doctor despite no openings? Or past waiting lists for the best preschool? How about moms who do not give up when they know something about their child is just “off” so they keep pushing until they finally get a diagnosis? If that isn’t determination, I don’t know what is!
- Discipline: We moms are nothing if not disciplined. We get pregnant and out go our favorite margarita, our late partying nights, and our tight sexy jeans. And that’s not all, as we breastfeed, we continue being disciplined about our diet. And lest we forget our schedules being changed to fit in medical appointments. While terribly exciting and well worth it, it still takes discipline to change one’s world upside down!
- Focus: For most adults, we have a hard time living “in the moment.” I know that I have always been the type of person who can’t sit and relax if there are dishes in the sink. But once we have children, we learn to focus on the here and now. When your little one asks you to play blocks with him, or read her a story, somehow the need to vacuum vanishes; the call you were going to make can wait.
- Sacrifice: Just as Olympians sacrifice just about everything for their sport, so moms sacrifice just about everything for their kids. Let’s face it, we would literally sacrifice our lives. But the fact is we sacrifice money – and lots of it, time, and as the quote by author Tenneva Jordan goes, “A mother is a person who seeing there are only four pieces of pie for five people, promptly announces she never did care for pie.”
The only thing missing is a gold medal, but then again, the hugs and kisses we get are worth far more, don’t you think?
How else do you feel being a mom is like being an Olympic champion?
