Keeping The Heart Happy - National Heart Health Month
For some time now I've known I was going to need to pay attention to my heart health, because family history isn't so kind with me. I am built like my dad, God bless him, and we tend to gain weight easily and hang on to it. He's got heart problems, his father has heart problems, it's simply a given that I will too.
Combine that with the extra worries that women have about their heart and I really do take things seriously on this front.
But if you've read me even a little bit here on Lifetime Moms you may notice I'm not really big on drugs or interventions. I like to allow the body to heal what it can, and prevent disease so I don't have to treat it later.
The best thing I feel I can do to protect my heart is to keep healthy fats in my diet and bad fats out. Fried and processed foods from the restaurants are a no. All the partial, mono unsaturated fats - bad. HEALTHY saturated fats like raw milk, coconut milk, avocado, cashews - all good.
I also am really a fan of keeping my level of Omegas nice and high based on a ton of research about how it keeps the heart happy, and I have my whole family on fish oil supplements since there's no way we can keep up with eating fish several times a week.
Finally, not enough can be said about exercise. It doesn't even have to be a lot to keep the heart happy - 3 times a week is fine. Do it. You'll be happy you did.
What are some tips you have for heart health? Do you have bad heart genes too?
